England: Mind the Gap Between London Past and Present

Travel Tracks: England

Unlike what you may think, today’s Travel Tracks has nothing to do with cute puppies. Rather, the song is about dating. Ramone Rochester, a.k.a. Ramz, describes a young bloke’s typical weekend in the East London town of Barking. Probably due to its relatability, the song quickly became a youth anthem.

In case you want to visit the area that inspired Ramz to write the song, take the London underground from Liverpool Street (Hammersmith and City), or from Westminster (District).

Barking does have a more interesting transport feature than the Tube. It is the end point of the Yiwu-London Railway Line, an impressive freight route that starts in China. Covering 7,500 miles, it is the longest railway freight route in the world.

Shuffle Surprise

From a 20-year old Englishman who just started out to a rebellious punk band from London that reigned for over a decade. “I Fought the Law” is from The Clash’ self-titled debut album, and was America’s first introduction to the English punk rockers in the summer of 1979. Even though the track fits in seamlessly with the rest of the band’s repertoire, it was already the second cover of “I Fought the Law.” The original hit the airwaves in 1960, and was popularized by the Bobby Fuller Four only six years later.

Do you know which song by The Clash is a recurring theme in the Netflix hit series “Stranger Things?”

Born and raised in the Netherlands, I now call the Midwest my home. When I am not traveling or writing, you may spot me enjoying a game of football (soccer), sporting the color orange or drinking too much coffee.
