The Coolest Calendar in Town: December Advent-ure

There is something about being rewarded for patience and opening small squares. One of my fondest childhood holiday memories include the Advent calendar. The one I had was filled with chocolates, so every day I would open one of the doors, and allow myself that breakfast* of champions.

Calendars of Christmas Yet-to-Come

What is the point of using a special calendar that doesn’t even have a full month though? Essentially, Advent is a countdown to Christmas. Since the date of the First (Sun)Day of Advent varies from year to year, most seasonal schedules start on December 1. So this year the fourth Sunday of Advent happens to be on the 24th.

As I found out recently, this getting ready for Christmas takes on many shapes. Apparently we have moved way beyond “boring” chocolates, because you can buy calendars filled with socks, LEGO, beauty products, tea, whisk(e)y and beer. The excitement that comes from opening doors/windows/flaps on an Advent calendar is not exclusively for kids anymore.

And excited I got, when I walked around Costco. After dodging decorations, trees, gift baskets and ornaments, there it was. A towering pile of the huge Brewer’s Advent Calendar 2017. Filled with 24 exclusive German beers, this must be the heaviest way to tell what day it is, that I can recall. Based on the jolly reactions at the cash register, and the fact that I had to show an ID, I knew I had struck calendar gold.

Which Day Will Have the Best Beer?

Starting in December, I will give you weekly updates on the contents of the calendar, and the perceived quality of these German beers. Unlike the lady at Costco — she loved her advantageous acquisition so much, that she and her husband could not wait to sample all the different beers — I will open the doors on the corresponding days. If you are impressed with my self-control, then yes, well, me too.

Stay tuned, and check my report on the Brewer’s Advent Calendar 2017!

*Chocolate was not my actual breakfast. Now, chocolate on bread with butter is a whole different story.
